Patrick Bronte, father of the Bronte sisters, was born into a local farming family in 1777. He Spent his early life in this area before moving to England to further his education.
Family life was lively as Partrick had nine brothers and sisters. The children had a reputation for wild behaviour and enjoyed playing practical jokes on the neighbours. Their pastime included cock fighting, shooting matches and long bullets. This involved pushing a heavy metal ball along public roads.
You can easily follow the story of Patrick Bronteand his family through the buildings that survive within the Bronte Homeland. The Bronte Homeland Drive starts at Drumballyroney Church and School and is well sign-posted along a 7.3 mile route.
