Cricket Field
You are standing just feet away from where the field once was built. You can use the photos to see where you are standing right now in comparison to the field. With your back to the hospital, the field would be in the main parking lot of Rite Aid.
Built in the 1870s by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, the Cricket Field was first home to PRR workers that formed "cricket teams". The field was host to many baseball stars of the past! The field was also home to the Homestead Grays.
"The Homestead Grays, arguably next to the Pittsburgh Crawfords (were) probably the greatest franchise in Negro League history" said baseball historian and author David Finoli.
Up to 26,000 people would pack Cricket Field to see Hall of Famers like Satchel Paige, Oscar Charleston, even Babe Ruth! On October 3, 1924, Ruth played a game during his Barnstorming Tour. Bob Meusel(Pittsburgh) also played in the game. Of course Babe Ruth hit a homerun that was the longest shot at the field.
Today, Altoona is home the Altoona Curve. Baseball and Altoona have gone hand and hand for many generations!
