Vilniaus miesto elektrinės statybos, vadovaujant pastato projekto autoriui, Vilniaus vyriausiajam inžinieriui Władysławui Malinowskiui, prasidėjo 1901 m. rugpjūčio 14 d. Mašinų salėje specialistai iš Varšuvos sumontavo du „Orthwein, Karasiński i S-ka“ gamyklos garo variklius, katilinėje – du Steinmüller tipo, „Bormann i Szwede“ garo katilus, kaminą iš modernių, tuščiavidurių, lengvų plytų sumūrijo Hamburgo mūrininkai. Elektrinės administracinio pastato bokštelis papuoštas vilniečio skulptoriaus Bolesławo Bałzukiewicziaus skulptūra „Elektra“.
Pagrindinės Vilniaus gatvės lankinių elektros lempų šviesa sužibo 198 lankiniai žibintai buvo prijungtas nedidelis kiekis elektros vartotojų, išsidėsčiusių centrinėje miesto dalyje. Pirmuoju elektrinės direktoriumi paskirtas Wiktoras Niewodniczańskis. Vilniaus miesto elektrinė, paleista 1903 m. vasario 14 d., davė pradžią ne tik Piromonto priemiesčio, bet ir viso Vilniaus modernizacijai. Elektrinė su pertraukomis veikė iki 1998 m. 2003 m. Švenčiant elektrinės šimtmetį, istorinėse patalpose buvo įkurtas Energetikos ir technikos muziejus.

The construction of the Vilnius city power plant, under the leadership of Vilnius Chief Engineer Władysław Malinowski, began in 1901 on August 14. Specialists from Warsaw installed two Steinmüller-type “Orthwein, Karasiński I S-ka” steam engines, “Bormann I Szwede” steam boilers, and a chimney made of modern, hollow, light bricks by Hamburg masons. At the time tower of the power plant's administrative building was decorated with a sculpture "Electra" by Vilnius sculptor Bolesław Bałzukiewicz.
There were 198 arc lamps connected to the power plant as well as a small number of electric consumers located in the central part of the city. Wiktor Niewodniczański has been appointed the first director. Vilnius City Power Plant was launched in 1903. February 14, began the modernization not only of the suburbs of Piromont but also of the whole of Vilnius. The power plant operated intermittently until 1998. Celebrating the centunary of the power plant in 2003, the Lithuanian Energy Museum was established in the historical premises which now evolved into Energy and Technology museum.
