Selle harvaesineva foobia all kannatajad võivad karta nii nööpide puudutamist kui ka nööpidega riiete kandmist, kuid raskemal juhul ka nööpide nägemist teiste riietel. Nagu ka muude foobiate puhul, võivad erinevatel inimestel hirmu tekitada erinevad nööpidega seotud aspektid. Mõni kardab nööpide kindlat tekstuuri, teisele tundub, et nööbid on räpased. Tihti võivad segi minna ka hirm ja vastikustunne nööpide suhtes. Karta võib ka hoopis nööpide kogemata allaneelamist või sissehingamist.
Raskekujulise foobia korral võivad hirmu tekitada ka teised nööpidega sarnased väikesed esemed nagu näiteks mündid.
Apple üks asutajatest Steve Jobs kannatas koumpounofoobia all ja tema foobia ei piirdunud vaid nööpidega. Foobia nööbisarnaste esemete suhtes viiski Apple tähelepanuväärseima saavutuseni – puutetundliku ekraaniga mobiiltelefonide ja virtuaalse klaviatuuriga seadmeteni.

Koumpounophobia is the fear of buttons, a relatively rare condition. Some only fear touching or wearing buttons, while others are scared of viewing buttons worn by others. Like any phobia, the specific fear may vary dramatically between sufferers. Some people are afraid of the texture of certain buttons. Others feel that buttons are somehow dirty. People may actually feel disgusted by buttons rather than actively afraid of them. Some people are not afraid of the button itself but are afraid that they might accidentally inhale or swallow them.
Depending on its severity, button phobia sometimes extends to other objects. Some people with a fear of buttons also develop the fear of small coins and other button-sized items.
Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple Inc., suffered from koumpounophobia. His phobia extended far beyond clothing buttons, ironically setting the stage for what was Apple's most remarkable success - touch screen mobile phones and virtual keyboards in the design of devices.
