Myokoin was opened in 859 by Emperor Heizei's third son, Shinnyo Shinno. The current main hall was rebuilt in 1967 after being hit by several fires. At the front of the main hall, there is a large ginkgo tree, which is one of the 100 best trees in Fuchu.
妙光院は、859年（貞観元年）に平城天皇の3男、真如親王（しんにょしんのう）が開山しました。何度かの火災に見舞われ、現在の本堂は昭和42年に再建されたものです。本堂脇には府中の名木百選の銀杏の大木があります。
