Geocache Description:

Located on the Israel National Trail, Beit Guvrin Villa was built by Sheikh Abullah al-Azi for his family at the beginning of the British Mandate (1917 - 1948). The Villa is a two story house. The doors  and most windows to the house are square, in contrast to the conventional arches of that period. The floors and some walls are beautifully tiled and the second floor balcony affords views of Kibbutz Beit Guvrin in the distance and the remains of the orchard that surrounded the house.

This villa has a storied history. During the War of Independence (1948) the Egyptian army split into two fronts, one moved east to the area of Kiryat Gat, then known as Fallujah.  During the war, the Egyptian headquarters were located in the villa, but the IDF surrounded an enclave of thousands of Egyptian army soldiers and several hundred local Arab fighters in the area, which became known as the Fallujah Pocket.  In November 1948 talks between Israel (Yigal Alon) and Egyptians (one negotiator was Gamal Abdel Nasser) took place in the Villa, but failed. Eventually Egypt signed a ceasefire agreement and withdrew from the area.

The IDF remained in this area and the Villa served as a military base until 2016 when the place was deserted.  It is a heritage site designated by the Council for Preservation of Heritage Sites in Israel.
