Na Gorjance je vezano tudi bogato ljudsko izročilo, ki ga je literarno obdelal Janez Trdina
Janez Trdina se je rodil 29. maj 1830 v Mengešu, v kmečki družini očetu Andreju in materi Mariji (roj. Kcel). Imel je še tri brate in štiri sestre. Oče je bil dvakrat oženjen. Janez kot tretji otrok je bil iz drugega zakona.
V domačem kraju je od leta1837 do 1840 obiskoval osnovno šolo, na prigovarjanje učitelja, kaplana in tete Česnovke (Marjete Kerst iz Lukovice) so ga namenili za nadaljne šolanje. Iz samostanske normalke v Kamniku je po nekaj tednih ušel.

Janez Trdina was born on May 29, 1830 in Mengeš, in a peasant family to father Andrej and mother Marija (born Kcel). He had three more brothers and four sisters. The father was married twice. Janez as the third child was from a second marriage.
From 1837 to 1840, he attended primary school in his hometown, and at the urging of his teacher, chaplain and aunt Česnovka (Marjeta Kerst from Lukovica), he was assigned to further education. He escaped from the monastery school in Kamnik after a few weeks.
