Advent kommer av latinets adventus som betyder ankomst. Advent inleds fjärde söndagen före jul och varar till och med julafton. De fyra söndagarna fram till jul benämns vardagligt första, andra, tredje och fjärde advent, eller mer korrekt första, andra, tredje och fjärde söndagen i advent. När juldagen infaller på en söndag, blir adventstiden som längst medan den blir som kortast de år juldagen infaller en måndag. Tiden fram till jul räknas ned på olika sätt beroende på tradition. På norra halvklotet är det årets mörkaste tid och många hem rymmer under den här tiden en adventsljusstake med fyra, vanligtvis levande ljus där ett ljus tänds för varje söndag i advent som passerats.

Advent comes from the Latin adventus which means arrival. Advent begins the fourth Sunday before Christmas and lasts through Christmas Eve. The four Sundays until Christmas are called everyday first, second, third and fourth advent, or more correctly the first, second, third and fourth Sunday of Advent. When Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, the advent time becomes the longest while it becomes the shortest of the years Christmas Day falls on a Monday. The time until Christmas is counted down in different ways depending on tradition. In the Northern Hemisphere, it is the darkest time of the year and many homes accommodate an Advent candlestick with four, usually candlelight candles during this time, with a candle lit for every Sunday in Advent that has passed.
