The William Scott Memorial is to the most famous Private in the Civil War. After being caught sleeping while on guard duty, he was courtmartialed and sentenced to be executed. Only a last minute reprieve by President Lincoln saved his life. Rt 302 is named the William Scott Memorial Highway in his honor. This granite monument is the result of many folks in Groton petitioning the VT Legislature.
