Tel Gamma (aka Tel Re’im) is located at the junction of Nahal Besor and Nahal Gerar. The Tel is 23 m high and covers an area of approx. 43 duman. It has had a long history and has been identified as the ancient city of Yursa, mentioned in the Armana letters. It was first settled by hunter-farmers in the Copper age (4000 BCE) for about 200 years. It was then abandoned for a thousand years when nomadic tribes settled in the area. It was reoccupied by various peoples, the Egyptians, the Philistines, and the Assyrians before being completely abandoned.
Thousands of Bronze and Iron Age pottery fragments can be found on the Tel, particularly on the various ascent paths.
Care needs to be taken near the edge because the soil is fragile and can collapse.
