Geocache Description:

I'd always been a bit intrigued by this derelict sign so set about looking up the history of its namesake. Not very much can be found however, except for some information on one page which states that one of the earliest settlers to the area, Bartholemew Rush, built Braemar House, as it was known, as a residence. It was later used as a boarding school, and then a guesthouse which is when the name changed to Braemar Lodge.

Braemar itself is named after this building, which also used to have its own station behind it on the old loop line which was the main railway south before its deviation (see the geocache near the railway for more history). The railway station was Rush's Siding, of which no trace remains today.

These days the 200 year old building seems to be used as a private residence, as no information can be found on staying there. I did find an old article from 2014 about how the owners always endure flooding around the property whenever it rains, however recent works on Braemar Rd seem to suggest this was addressed. The old sign mentions the entry is on this road, but all that can be seen is an old tennis court on the left of the long driveway. I'm sure many guests would have used this back in it's heyday!

The cache: you can either park at GZ where the sign is or park around the corner and walk back. Be careful as it's a busy road.
