옥돌해변은 모래 대신 크고 작은 아름다운 자갈들이 깔린 바닷가로 유명하다. 이곳 자갈들의 독특한 모양은 이 지역의 지형과 직접적인 관련이 있습니다.
옥돌해변 남쪽에는 유문암에 매우 조밀하게 쪼개진 면이 발달하여 있는 암석들을 볼 수 있습니다. 이것들을 절리(joints) 또는 벽개(fracture cleavage) 라고 부른다. 이 절리 또는 벽개는 어떻게 생길까요? 용암이 흐른 이후 급격하게 냉각되어 암석이 될 때, 액체에서 고체로 상태가 변하면서 부피가 줄어듭니다. 이때 암석에는 수직으로 작은 틈(절리)이 생깁니다. 옥돌해변의 자갈들은 이 암석이 풍화로 부서져서 만들어진 것입니다.

Okdol Beach is famous not for the sand, but for its beautiful beaches covered with large and small pebbles. The unique shape of the pebbles here is directly related to the topography of the area.
On the south side of Okdol Beach, you can observe rhyolite rocks with very densely cracked surfaces. These cracks are called joints or fracture cleavages. How did these joints or fracture cleavages formed? When lava cools down rapidly and becomes a rock, its volume decreases as it changes from liquid to solid. At this time, small vertical cracks (joints) are formed in the rock. This rock has been broken by weathering and made the pebbles on Okdol Beach.
