Last century the Riverland was full of open channels, which delivered the water to the fruit blocks. Although they were lined with concrete some water was lost to leakage and of course evaporation was also an issue. Since that time the channels have been replaced by underground pipes. Another advantage of the massive upgrade to irrigation was that growers no longer needed to get up in the middle of the night to open valves and pull up wooden boards to distribute the water to their channels etc. Thus it was with some surprise that the crane spotted this length of open channel as she drove around exploring the Riverland. If you are caching at night please be aware of the open channel and take care when approaching GZ.
