Kirche St. Helena

Church of St. Helena
In a uniquely beautiful location, on a hill with an overwhelming view of the Latemar, Rosengarten and Schlern, the church of St. Helena was built around the 12th century.
Inside, it conceals one of the masterpieces of the Bozen school of painting from the 15th century. Many of the wonderful wall paintings are still very well preserved, especially inside in the apse and in the vaults.
The façade of the church shows a depiction of St. Christopher and on the south wall there are interesting images of Mary with baby Jesus and the three virgins Catherine, Barbara and Margaret.
The church is also known for having the oldest bell in the whole region.
In old lore it is said that the church stands on silver steps. This is presumably because there used to be mining tunnels in the area.
The church is usually open daily. The key is kept in the Kreuzhof right next door, which is also a snack station.
