Geocache Description:

LEGENDS of the LENAPE

The Original People (Lenni-Lenape) inhabited New Jersey long before the Europeans arrived. They were a very peaceful people with a strong sense of tradition and a well organized life-style. Unfortunately, they did not survive long after the arrival of the Europeans. Conflict between the cultures led to hostile wars. The Europeans took their land, brought diseases, guns and alcohol that created a land that no longer appealed to their Lenape traditions. Most tribes moved west until their promised land (reservations) were taken once again by white settlers. All that is left are many town names, landmarks and the land of these original inhabitants.

Mantua is a Lenape word "Manta" meaning chorus of frogs. In 1976, the township seal was made to depict a Lenape Indian Brave. It stands today as the official Township Seal. This geocache is dedicated to the first inhabitants of Mantua Twp., the Lenni-Lenape Indian. Enclosed is a travel bug from a 1990 Mantua Fun Day. It is a wooden nickel with the township seal.

PLEASE DO NOT KEEP This Travel Bug! Pass it along so many can learn of the Lenape Tribe. Enclosed is $1 for the FTF. Who knows, the area where this cache now stands may have been the hunting ground or home of these forgotten people! Have fun!

"History is everywhere in Gloucester County!"

This is a small cache, enough to sign your name and maybe place a GeoCoin or Small Travel Bug. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN PEN!

Kudos to K8Brownie for FTF - Glad you beat the Snowstorm!
