Italo Calvino è stato uno fra gli scrittori italiani più importanti della seconda parte del XX secolo.
Nato a Santiago de las Vegas a Cuba, trascorre la sua giovinezza a Sanremo e in seguito partecipa alla Resistenza italiana. Dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale si trasferisce a Torino e lì lavora nell’editoria partecipando attivamente alla ricostruzione dell’Italia. Durante la sua vita si interessa a diverse discipline che lo portano ad avere una vasta cultura eclettica. È morto a Siena ed è sepolto nel cimitero di Castiglione della Pescaia.
In generale, nelle opere di Calvino troviamo accostata la quotidianità una forte dose d’immaginazione: le due tendenze si mescolano negli scritti dell’autore sempre con una certa analisi razionale. Il fantastico di Calvino è infatti sempre contenuto da una razionalità che tante volte viene da temi scientifici o parascientifici. Nell’ultima fase della sua produzione Calvino predilige un modo di scrivere combinatorio che arriva a stravolgere le strutture narrative della tradizione.
Nella vita del signor Palomar c’è stata un’epoca in cui la sua regola era questa: primo, costruire nella sua mente un modello, il più perfetto, logico, geometrico possibile; secondo, verificare se il modello s’adatta ai casi pratici
osservabili nell’esperienza; terzo, apportare le correzioni necessarie perché il modello e realtà coincidano. Questo procedimento, elaborato dai fisici e dagli astronomi che indagano sulla struttura della materia e dell’universo, pareva a Palomar il solo che gli permettesse d’affrontare i più aggrovigliati problemi umani, e in primo luogo quelli della società e del miglio modo di governare. Bisognava riuscire a tener presenti da una parte la realtà informe e dissennata della convivenza umana, che non fa che generare mostruosità e disastri, e
dell’altra un modello d’organismo sociale perfetto, disegnato con linee nettamente tracciate, rette e circoli ed ellissi, parallelogrammi di forme, diagrammi con ascisse e ordinate.
Per costruire un modello – Palomar lo sapeva – occorre partire da qualcosa, cioè bisogna avere dei principi da cui far discendere per deduzione il proprio ragionamento. Questi principi – detti anche assiomi o postulati – uno non se li sceglie ma li ha già, perché se non li avesse non potrebbe nemmeno mettersi a pensare. Anche Palomar dunque ne aveva, ma – non essendo né un matematico né un logico – non si curava di definirli.

Italo Calvino was one of the most important Italian writers of the second half of the XX century.
Born in Santiago de las Vegas in Cuba, he spent his youth in Sanremo and later participated in the Italian Resistance. After the Second World War he moved to Turin and there he worked in publishing, actively participating in the reconstruction of Italy. During his life he is interested in different disciplines that lead him to have a vast eclectic culture. He died in Siena and was buried in the cemetery of Castiglione della Pescaia.
In general, in Calvino's works we find a strong dose of imagination juxtaposed to everyday life: the two trends are mixed in the author's writings, always with a certain rational analysis. Calvino's fantasy is in fact always contained by a rationality that often comes from scientific or parascientific themes. In the last phase of his production, Calvino prefers a combinatorial way of writing that overturns the narrative structures of tradition.
In Mr Palomar’s life there was a period when his rule was this: first, to construct in his mind a model, the most perfect, logical, geometrical model possible; second, to see if the model is adapted to the practical situations observed in experience; third, to make the corrections necessary for model and reality to coincide. This procedure, developed by physicists and astronomers, who investigate the structure of matter and of the universe, seemed to Palomar the only way to tackle the most entangled human problems, those involving society, first of all, and the best way to govern. He had to be able to bear in mind, on the one hand, the shapeless and senseless reality of human society, which does nothing but generate monstrosities and disasters; and, on the other hand, a model of the perfect social organism, designed with neatly drawn lines, straight or circular or elliptical, parallelograms of forms, diagrams with abscissas and ordinates.
To construct a model – as Palomar was aware – you have to start with something; that is, you have to have principles, from which, by deduction, you achieve your own line of reasoning. These principles, also known as axioms or postulates, are not something you select; you have them already, because if you did not have them, you could not even begin thinking. So Palomar also had some, but since he was neither a mathematician nor a logician he did not bother to define them.
