Geocache Description:

HISTORIC GORE HILL CEMETERY

This is a 6 stage multi which takes you to some points of historical significance in the cemetery as you walk through providing information to calculate the co-ordinates for the final GZ hide. All waypoints are close to the main carriageway which was originally gravel and now is grassed. There is not need to step on or disturb any graves. The waypoints can be done in any order depending where you enter the cemetery. The list of waypoints is a suggested order only.

The starting pin-drop is a good place to view the entire cemetery.

Parking - there is only free parking in the streets adjacent to the cemetery on Sundays. Suggested parking is in the local streets across the Pacific Highway although this can be difficult at certain times due to the proximity to RNSH and visiting hours.

There are 2 main entry points to the cemetery at either end of the original Carriageway, one on the Pacific Highway near Gore Hill Oval and the other in Westbourne Street. There is a pedestrian entry point along the Pacific Highway fence at S33 49.463 E151 11.302

History

Approximately 6 hectares of land was dedicated for use as a cemetery in the mid 1800s by the mayor, William Tunks with the first burial a few years later and continuing for over a century. The cemetery was divided into sections by Religion and areas were landscaped with plant species from different areas around the world. Unfortunately many of these plantings are classified as weeds here in Sydney and the cemetery became overgrown and birds distributed the seeds throughout local gardens. Graves were also derelict and it was difficult to even find the paths to walk between them until the mid 1980s when much work began to restore the cemetery to a place of historic significance. It is now a lovely place to visit and walk through.

The cemetery looks its best in spring when it is covered in flowers.

There are many famous people buried here including William Tunks a former mayor of St Leonards, Dave Gregory the first captain of the Australian Cricket team in 1877, the Horden family who founded the Anthony Hordens empire and Mary MacKillop was first interred here before being moved to a specially built chapel in North Sydney.

This is my first multi. I hope you succeed!

You can get some really strange GPS readings in this place!!!

Remember if you have not signed the physical log inside the cache container you have not successfully found the cache and your online log may be deleted. There was a pencil inside the container at the time of publication but these can go missing so it is essential you carry your own writing stick. Sadly no photo logs are acceptable.
