With the invention of the internal combustion engine and the motor vehicle our method of travelling has gotten much faster over the years. The old paths or tracks that people used became wider and smoother to accomodate these new vehicles. As the motor car became faster the curvy old roads for horses and bullock drays, that were mostly built by hand, were widened, straightened and the grades reduced to allow for a swifter and safer passage. Evidence of the old roads still exist and can usually be found where there has been significant earthworks for the construction of the current roads.
Across the road from the the cache site in the paddock you can see a drain pipe which indicated the location of the old Main South Road. There is a larger drain about 120m towards Dunedin but there is more room for pulling off the highway here. The old alignment is quite visible when looking at aerial photos but these drains help you to see it from the ground. The DCC rates maps show the old property lines but the paddocks are now private property so please don't climb the fences. It isn't as clear here why the road has been moved but looking at the DCC rates map the road did weave slightly along the hillside to the west. The highway now is quite straight with the one long sweeping bend.
Parking here is best made eastbound on the way to Dunedin (which is the side of the road where the cache is located).
