This cache is placed near Tunks Park, named after William Tunks || who was the first Mayor of St Leonards who served for 16 years (1867-1883). He was born to John Tunks and Esther Arndell in the Nepean District (out west near the base of the blue mountains). His grandfather came out with the first fleet, as a Marine on the HMS Sirius, the flagship vessel in the fleet.
At the time he was very much what we would consider an Environmentalist today, and fiercly fought for open public spaces, including St Leonards Park. He ensured in his time in Council, that land be set aside for public parks, reserves, harbour side swimming pools and the Gore Hill cemetery as well. Many of the puclic spaces which we still appreciate today are thanks to him.

If you have time, you may want to check out the memorial fountain dedicated to William Tunks || in St Leonards Park, if you are ever in that area (its approx 30 mins / 3km walk away). It was vandalised and demolished in the 1970's, but with a grant of funds from the bicentenial council in 1986, the destroyed fountain was soon after replaced.
