Aiz Zaķiem pēc 1,5 km gājiena Mežtaka nogriežas no Sēļu–Virešu ceļa un tālāk līkumo pa mazu lauku ceļu līdz pat Zvārtavai, kur garas koku alejas galā redzama Zvārtavas pils. Zvārtavas muiža cēlusies no Adzeles-Gaujienas pils apgabalā piešķirtajiem lēņiem ap 1443. gadu. Lēnis ir zemes gabals, ko kungs piešķīra lietošanā bruņiniekam par karadienestu. Muižas kungu māju tās tagadējā izskatā uzcēla 1881. gadā, kas ir gandrīz vienīgais neogotikas interjera paraugs Latvijas muižās. No senākās apbūves palikušas klasicisma stilā celtās, vēlāk neogotikas stilā modernizētās saimniecības ēkas, staļļi, dārznieka māja, pie ezera uzceltā peldmāja ar veļas mazgātavu un netālu arī putnu māja, kučiera māja, siltumnīca ar dārznieka māju, pirts, ugunsdzēsēju māja, lopu kūts un krogs.
Cauri gadsimtiem pilī mainījušies muižnieki, ēkā bijusi ciema padome, komunistiskās partijas komiteja, aizsargu organizācijas mītne, sākumskola ar internātu, kultūras nams, bet kopš 1970. gada Zvārtavas muižā saimnieko Latvijas Mākslinieku savienība, kas arī sākusi to dēvēt par Zvārtavas pili.

Iesakām apvienot slēpņu meklēšanu ar pastaigu pa kādu no 15 ainaviskajiem Mežtakas Ziemeļu daļas posmiem.

Description of the place: When you have passed Zaķi and walked for 1.5 km, the Forest Trail turns off the Sēļi-Vireši road and continues along a small country road until it reaches Zvārtava, where Zvārtava Castle can be seen at the end of a long avenue of trees.
Zvārtava Manor originated from the fiefs granted in the area of Adzele-Gaujiena Castle around 1443. A fief is a piece of land granted by a lord for the use of a knight in return for military service. The manor house was built in its present form in 1881 and is almost the only example of neo-Gothic interiors in Latvian manor houses. Farm buildings, the stables, the gardener’s house, the bathing house with laundry built by the lake, the bird house, the groom's house, the greenhouse with the gardener's house, the sauna, the firemen house, the cattle barn and the inn are the oldest preserved buildings built in classicism and later modernised in neo-Gothic style.
Over the centuries, the castle has been occupied by a number of noblemen, a village council, a communist party committee, the headquarters of a guards' organisation, a primary school with a boarding school, a house of culture, but since 1970 Zvārtava Manor has been owned by the Artists' Union of Latvia, which was the one to call it Zvārtava Castle.

The cache is a part of the “The Forest Trail” cache series. The Forest Trail is a part of the European long-distance hiking route E11 in the Baltic States, which leads through the most beautiful forests and national parks of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The project, which has been developed with the financial support of the European Regional Development Fund Central Baltic Programme 2014-2020, includes 45 cache places in the northern part of the Forest Trail from Old Riga to the Estonian border. We recommend combining cache hunting with a walk along one of the 15 scenic sections of the northern part of the Forest Trail.
