The completely optional UnChallenge is to find 20 EarthCaches, each with a unique EC classification. There is no requirement to complete this UnChallenge in order to find and log this cache. If you wish to post that you have completed the optional requirements, you can find a checker here.
EarthCaches are organized by a classification system, which is posted on the linked Google Sheet, EarthCaches for Challenge Qualifications; the classifications are not listed on the EarthCache page at Geocaching.com. This system categorizes each EC according to the following 22 classification types:
- Cave/Karst Feature
- Coastal Feature
- Erosional Feature
- Fault Feature
- Fold Feature
- Fossil Site
- Geologic Time
- Geomorphological Feature
- Glacial Feature
- Historical Site
- Hydrologic Feature
- Igneous (Plutonic) Feature
- Igneous (Volcanic) Feature
- Impact Feature
- Metamorphic Feature
- Mineral Site
- Mining Site
- Other Feature
- River Feature
- Sedimentary Feature
- Soils
- Structural Feature
If the EC you are looking for isn't listed in the spreadsheet, please send Tung8 the EC code and the classification you believe it is. This will help in developing the spreadsheet and updating the checker.
The challenge idea came from the following caches:
Backslash Challenge Series
The Backslash Challenge Series is a set of challenges and unchallenges located in the western part of Kern County. The caches are placed along Reserve Road (and now a connector and parallel road) that runs from McKittrick southeast towards Taft (which makes a backslash in the traditional north is up map). Another nearby punctuation shaped challenge series is the Kern County Challenge Series. Be sure to find all of the challenges in both series!!!
General Rules for the BCS(C)(P)
- The BCS caches are all at the posted coordinates unless stated otherwise.
- You should be able to find this series in a two wheel drive vehicle without leaving Reserve Road. Please do not attempt in wet weather.
- You must sign the physical cache log in order to claim the cache as found.
- You may sign the physical cache log before completing the challenge requirements. However, you may not log a challenge as found online until you have completed the specific challenge requirements. UnChallenge caches do not require documentation and can be signed and logged online as a find at anytime with no Additional Logging Requirements.
- You may log the cache as a "write note" to signify that you have signed the physical log, to ask questions, and/or to double check your qualifications before heading to the physical Geocache.
- For BCS(C)(P) Challenge caches (grandfathered), you must post your supporting documentation when you log the cache as found or your online "found it" will be deleted. However, for any challenge cache with a checker (post moratorium), you are not required to post evidence as the cache owner is expected to check for you. We do appreciate posting the simple top of a Project GC checker confirming you found it, but it is not required. BCS UnChallenge caches do not require supporting documentation and can be found, signed, and logged as found at anytime.
- None of these challenges have any sort of date restrictions.
- Taking photos at the cache site or in the area is encouraged, but not required.
