Designa-se hoje Mata Nacional da Machada, a propriedade constituída pelo antigo Pinhal de Vale de Zebro e pela Quinta da Machada.
A Quinta da Machada pertencia ao “Convento de Nossa Senhora da Luz da Ordem de Cristo”, porém quando foram extintas as Ordens Religiosas em 1834 foi adquirida por um particular, sendo mais tarde aforada ao Estado que a anexou ao Pinhal de Vale de Zebro.
Encontra-se situada no centro da Península de Setúbal, entre as povoações de Coina, Palhais e Santo António da Charneca. Sujeita a Regime Florestal esta Mata encontra-se hoje, sob a gestão da Direcção Regional de Agricultura do Ribatejo e Oeste e ocupa uma área com cerca de 385,7 hectares.
Sendo a única área florestal de razoável dimensão do Concelho, a Mata é considerada o “Pulmão da Cidade” e um local privilegiado para actividades de recreio e lazer, dispõe de um parque de merendas e diversos fontanários, para além de um Centro de Educação Ambiental e de uma rede de estradas e caminhos frequentemente utilizados para práticas desportivas, permitindo à população uma melhor qualidade de vida.

Today it is called Mata Nacional da Machada, the property made up of the old Pinhal de Vale de Zebro and Quinta da Machada.
Quinta da Machada belonged to the “Convent of Nossa Senhora da Luz of the Order of Christ”, however when the Religious Orders were extinguished in 1834 it was acquired by a private individual, later being leased to the State which annexed it to the Pinhal de Vale de Zebro.
It is located in the center of the Setúbal Peninsula, between the villages of Coina, Palhais and Santo António da Charneca. Subject to the Forestry Regime, this Forest is now under the management of the Regional Directorate of Agriculture of Ribatejo e Oeste and occupies an area of about 385.7 hectares.
As the only reasonably sized forest area in the Municipality, Mata is considered the “Lung of the City” and a privileged place for recreational and leisure activities, it has a picnic area and several fountains, in addition to an Environmental Education Center. and a network of roads and paths frequently used for sports, allowing the population a better quality of life.
