Geocache Description:

”Mural”

The Erith Mural was originally created by artist William Mitchell between 1968 and 1970 and was located on the outer wall of the former Riverside Swimming Baths. This much loved piece of art was restored and relocated to Erith Town Centre by the London Borough of Bexley in partnership with the Homes & Communities Agency.

William Mitchell's striking mural is an example of "cloisonne", an artistic technique similar to that used in the production of stained glass. The picture is created by arranging coloured panels emphasised by raised borders of material and decorated with glass beads and other material. This detailing uses another technique called "pas-relief" creating a bright and dynamic effect to help depict characters faces or highlight features such as windows. It is rare for the cloisonne technique to be used on a piece this size.

The Mural portrays numerous scenes connected to Erith's history. The riverside town once known as Lesnes has played apart in several key events including the murder of Thomas Becket and the reign of King Henry VIII. It's location on the River Thames, ideally placed for access to London, made it an important shipping port, which encouraged industry and community growth in the surrounding areas.

On the information board there is a key to the pictures on the mural, A to Q. Take the first letter of the related sentence and convert it to a number.
