#24 The Dogliest Detective and the Case of the Largest Gathering
The staff of the Alaska Consulting Detective Agency were trying to look professional while Captain McGruff gave a contract pitch to the manager of a famous rock band planning a concert in Anchorage.
"We provided security for the President of Mongolia visit to Alaska. That time I let a junior employee, 'Cheechako' Toby, handle that job because he knew a lot more about Mongolia than he does about Alaska. We call him 'Cheechako' until he figures out what that means."
The band manager looked puzzled by that last comment, but Toby had heard it a couple dozen times before and this time it evoked in him images of straw being piled on a camel's back.
The band manager addressed the employees, "I want my concert to be the largest crowd in the history of Alaska. We have a whole new song and video built around that theme. I am confident we will draw more people than that any other gathering in Alaska history, right Captain McGruff?"
The beaming Captain said "Since your concert will be in the good summer weather, we will easily set the record."
Toby just couldn't stop himself. "But the largest gathering of Alaskans happened in the winter."
Captain McGruff chuckled and said to the band manager. "See what I have to put up with from uppity junior detectives." Then he turned back to the employees. "Toby, we are not talking about a dog race. There is no building in Alaska that could hold as many people as this concert will draw. Even that hockey arena holds less than ten thousand people."
Toby's tail wagged a little, but he kept it under control. "The largest gathering of Alaskans was outdoors. They closed the schools and people travelled long distances from all over the state to attend. About sixty-five thousand or more people were there -- one in seven Alaskans."
The band manager gave a questioning look and Captain McGruff pulled him back for a private conversation. Toby could see that the band manager was not interested in holding the event if it would not be the largest gathering in Alaska history. So Toby used the awkward silence in the room to sneak out of the meeting and take an early lunch.
Toby's end-of-the-year job review was a little rough, but he didn't care.
