Maria (pronounced Ma-RYE-ah) Mitchell was an astronomer, librarian, naturalist, and educator. In 1847, she discovered a telescopic comet, which later became known as “Miss Mitchell’s Comet” in her honor. She was awarded a gold medal for her discovery, presented to her by the King of Denmark. Maria became Professor of Astronomy at Vassar College in 1865. She is also recognized as the first female professional astronomer.
The Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) was founded in 1902 by some of her former students, family members, and admirers. Today, the MMA operates two observatories, a natural science museum, an aquarium, and a research center. The MMA also preserves the historic birthplace of Maria Mitchell, which is right across the street from this geocache.
