Bormio è oggi conosciuta soprattutto come un centro turistico di montagna e, in particolare, una stazione per gli sport invernali (dove tra l’altro si svolgeranno le gare delle prossime olimpiadi sulla neve).
La sua origine è molto antica: il ritrovamento di un bassorilievo datato al IV secolo A.C. proverebbe l’esistenza di un insediamento già in quel periodo.
Il nome lo deve probabilmente alle sue acque termali, derivando da un termine indoeuropeo “gwor” e poi “bhor” , per “caldo””. Per le terme infatti, era conosciuto già nell’antichità; le troviamo citate da Plinio il Vecchio nel I secolo. Oggi sono presenti ben tre stabilimenti termali, che utilizzano alcune delle sorgenti calde presenti nell’area.
La sua storia, è stata molto ricca di avvenimenti politici e militari per la sua posizione , un crocevia strategico tra i suoi passi alpini.
A partire dal 1000 fu al centro di una lunga contesa tra i vescovi di Como e di Coira diventando il capoluogo di un contado e ottenendo privilegi e dazi sulle merci in transito.
Dal 1376 Bormio, insieme alla Valtellina, divenne area di influenza dei Visconti di Milano, mantenendo e rafforzando la propria autonomia
Nel 1512 il Contado di Bormio passò, con la Valtellina e il Contado di Chiavenna, sotto il dominio delle Leghe Grigie (i Grigioni) che perdurò, salvo brevi parentesi, fino al 1797, anno in cui si instaurò la Repubblica Cisalpina di cui fece parte condividendo poi le vicende della Lombardia fino all’unità d’Italia.
Di questo passato movimentato conserva molte testimonianze nel centro storico, che si percorre tra palazzi, torri, chiese e negozi in architettura locale che propongono articoli alla moda.
