This geocache is located in the Bell Wood which is a mixed conifer (predominantly Norway Spruce and Scots Pine) woodland, and is owned and managed by Mid Deeside Ltd, on behalf of the local community. Thanks to Mid Deeside Ltd for agreeing to these caches.
The large network of paths can be explored on foot, bike or horseback, and there are several weather huts and picnic benches strategically placed within the 110 Ha woodland. There are several well maintained paths, two which are particularly accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The wood plays home to a host of wildlife, please keep your dog under close control at all times.
Parking is available in a community car park off Bellwood Drive, Aboyne.
Please respect the SCOTTISH OUTDOOR ACCESS CODE at all times, and as always in Geocaching, remember our litter policy – CITO ( cache in, trash out)
If you look at the woodlands page on the Mid Deeside website, you will find a map of the paths and tracks in Bell Wood which you may find helpful.
On 26 November 2021, Storm Arwen hit the east coast and the storm force winds caused extensive damage, including to parts of the Bell Wood. The various paths and tracks in Bell Wood have since been cleared of fallen trees.
From this cache you can see some of the devastation from Storm Arwen. It came from an unusual direction - most storms round here are westerly or south westerly but this was a northerly. Some parts of this woodland are nearly fully flattened, other locations with different exposure have no damage.
