Shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1886, Mancetter Wharf was served by a tramway from nearby Jubilee Quarry (now Mancetter Quarry). Wagons loaded with diorite would be drawn possibly by horse to be discharged into boats here on the Coventry Canal. By the start of the 20th century, the line had been extended and a second bridge was built alongside the original canal bridge to a siding located alongside the nearby Trent Valley railway line. In these later years, the wagons were hauled by steam narrow gauge engines.
The cache is located on one of these bridges. Please be careful as large lorries use this bridge to access the quarry.
If you come here in early Spring, take a moment to watch the Sand Martins as they nest in holes in the old wharf.
