The short-lived mid-20th century industrial past of Guangzhou's historical urban core lives on in the form of intensive cottage industries dispersed in many areas (often filling orders for some large on-demand fashion retailers), but larger factories have completely disappeared over the last few decades. This is especially true of land and labour intensive activities such as textiles manufacturing, which has not only departed the urban core but more recently bade farewell to Guangdong Province in search of cheaper production locations in interior provinces or Southeast Asia.
Still, there are some traces of the industrial past including in names such as this community, 逢源纺织宿舍小区, or Fengyuan Textile Dormitory Community; a name harking back to both an industrial past as well as an earlier socialist era in which state-owned company units provided housing for workers. Presumably this area is named after one such housing block. In the 1980s and 1990s and into the 2000s these work unit housing apartments were transferred to the private ownership of the employees; a massive transfer of wealth to urban residents creating an abiding inter-generational wealth gap with rural residents who benefitted from no such transfers.
As in other parts of Guangzhou the local residents take pride in their surroundings and into this dense urban core some public spaces have been claimed and established, letting some more sunlight in and providing a welcome open and green space. In early 2022 some of the street level housing facing the newly-built park are being renovated seemingly with a view to shopfronts being installed in the previously walled-off and residential-only buildings. The cache overlooks the the small plaza / park from a head-high (or higher) perch.
