Cocke County History Series: A cache series celebrating the history and people of Cocke County, Tennessee.
Background: Kiffin Yates Rockwell was born in 1892 in Newport. He attended the Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee College before moving to Atlanta for work. Following the outbreak of World War I, he joined the French Foreign Legion and served in the trenches with his brother. He applied to join the French Air Service and was accepted, becoming the first American to shoot down an enemy plane. He died in September of 1916 when his plane was shot down by a German avaitor. He is buried in France.
