Geocache Description:

This hide is to celebrate the NZ MEGA 2020/22 and The Other “GEO“ Tour Adventure Lab.

As you all know we have had a couple of delays of the NZ MEGA due to a thing called covid19.

But no more, January 22, 2022 is the day when at Alfriston Hall we will get to celebrate all things Geocaching.

The adLab will take cachers to some of the volcanic features around Auckland, there are:

- 53 recognised volcanic cones in the Auckland Volcanic Field (they erupted within the last 200,000 years)

- at least 85 in the South Auckland Volcanic Field (erupting between 1.5 million and 500,000 years ago).

Mt Roskill is 105m and is also called Puketāpapa which means “flat topped hill”

It is a double scoria cone with lava flows, which erupted around 105,000 years ago.

As you drive in, the grassed area on the right of the entrance is near the former tennis courts and croquet lawn. They moved to Harold Long Reserve (1936-2005) when SH20 was extended.

There was a quarry that stopped operating in the 1920’s, and between 1961-62 a round concrete reservoir was built in the crater.

So drive on in, and take in the view!
