Geocache Description:

Captain Charles Sturt and Captain Collete Barker are well know for their explorations in this region in the early 1830s. Both men have a number of memorials in the region commemorating their exploits.

In 1830 Captain Charles Sturt was the first to explore the western flowing rivers of New South Wales and to prove thye all joined the Ruver Murray and eventually flowed into the Southern Ocean. But having got toot the Murray mouth they needed to return to Sydney. Rowing back against the current was hard. Their supplies ran out and, when they reached the current site of Narranderah in April, they were unable to go any further. Sturt sent two men in search of supplies and they returned in time to save the party from starvation. But Sturt never fully recovered his health. By the time they returned to Sydney they had rowed and sailed nearly 2,900 kilometres of the river system.

In 1831 Captain Collete Barker on the recommendation of Sturt was sent to explore the east coast of Gulf St Vincent to see if another channel from the Murray entered the sea there. He did not find any such channel but did find the mouth of the Onkaparinga River and the Port River inlet. He explored inland including climbing Mt Lofty. He then moored his ship near Yankallila Bay and headed overland to explore the area around Encounter Bay and Lake Alexandrina. On 29 April 1831, they reached the mouth of the Murray River. Barker swam across the narrow channel the next morning, went over a sandhill, and was never seen again. A few days later the party learned that Barker had been killed by the local indigenous people who may have taken him for a whaler or sealer, many of whom had abducted Indigenous women,

Near the posted coordinates you will find a memorial with two plaques. One for each man. Taylor unveiled one on May AB, CDEF and Kevin unveiled the other on February GH IJKL
