#25 The Dogliest Detective and the Case of the Coded Combination
Toby had just ordered his free lunch, courtesy of three Alaska game wardens. They were seeking his help on a case, But the meal was cut short by an urgent call and Toby's stomach was growling,
Toby jumped into a patrol truck to ride alongThe Warden Sargent briefed Toby as they sped past the airport.
"We got a tip about a boat doing some illegal activities. I think we can get a good look at it from a wildlife observation station overlooking the Inlet. The field biologists there have powerful spotting scopes and tripods they use to tally whales and waterfowl counts."
The observation station turned out to be a re-purposed cargo container acting as a secure storage area. Its roof was decked out as an observation platform.
Unfortunately, no biologists were on duty and all the equipment must have been locked up in the metal cargo container behind an industrial 4-digit combination lock.
"I can see the suspect boat way out on the Inlet, but it is too far for our binoculars." said the Warden Sargent.
"We need the scopes from the container to see anything useful and we don't have time to track down the biologists to get the combination. Let's grab the crowbars and bolt cutters and see if we can get this open -- we can apologize for all the damage later."
Toby gave a puzzled look and the Warden Sargent said, "What else can we do? We can't just sit here and play tic-tac-toe while waiting for the biologists to show up." He gestured toward some minor graffiti of dots and lines on the container door". The game wardens went back to their trucks to gather tools.
But when they returned, the cargo container door was open and Toby was inside munching on trail mix, caribou jerky and other snacks stored there. The rest of the afternoon the game wardens watched the suspect boat through one scope while Toby used another scope to watch beluga whales and keep a tally of his finds.
