Francis Edward Ledwidge (19 August 1887 – 31 July 1917) was an Irish poet from Slane, County Meath, sometimes known as the "poet of the blackbirds". Ledwidge was killed at the Battle of Passchendaele. There is a Ledwidge museum just up the road towards Drogheda worth paying a visit if you enjoy literature.
The opening poem of "Songs of the Fields" (1916) entitled "To my best friend" captures that deep love of nature;
"I love the wet-lipped wind that stirs the hedge
And kisses the bent glowers that drooped for rain,
That stirs the poppy on the sun-burned hedge
And like a swan dies singing, without pain
The lilies' frills, and the blue harebell rings,
And the sweet blackbird in the rainbow sings."
