Geocache Description:

Rock layers in the Bay of Kotor

When standing at the coordinates you see layers of sedimentary rock right in front of you.

Sedimentary rocks
Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the accumulation or deposition of mineral or organic particles at Earth's surface, followed by cementation. Sedimentation is the collective name for processes that cause these particles to settle in place. The particles that form a sedimentary rock are called sediment, and may be composed of geological detritus (minerals) or biological detritus (organic matter).

Stratigraphy
Stratigraphy is a branch of geology concerned with the study of rock layers (strata) and layering (stratification). It is primarily used in the study of sedimentary and layered volcanic rocks.

In geology and related fields, a stratum (plural: strata) is a layer of sedimentary rock or soil, or igneous rock that was formed at the Earth's surface.

Logging this Earthcache
To log this Earthcache, please solve the following tasks and send them to me (Email or Messagecenter):

1. Describe the color and texture of the layers.
2. What is the direction and the (approximate) angle of the layers?
Use abbreviations like "NW" (from North towards West) for the direction and degree for the angle.
Please give reasons in your own words why direction and angle are like that.
3. How thick are the rock layers/strata? Estimate in centimeters.
Measuring the exact thickness would be great but is not mandatory and requires some climbing.
4. How many layers can you count in the left part of the rock?
5. Optional but greatly appreciated: Take a photo of yourself in front of the strata and post with your log.

You can log immediately. You don't have to wait for an answer. Please send the answers in English or German.

Kada stojite na koordinatama, vidite slojeve sedimentnih stijena točno ispred vas.

Sedimentne stijene

1. Opišite boju i teksturu slojeva.

Have fun with the cache!
