Het domein van 16 ha is gelegen op de grens van Nieuwpoort en Koksijde. Het grenst aan het kanaal Nieuwpoort-Veurne en aan de Groene As ‘De Frontzate’. Waterrijke natuur, waterberging en zachte recreatie zoals wandelen, picknicken, vissen en mountainbiken staan centraal in dit domein. De Koolhofput ontstond uit een 10 ha grote zandwinningsput die in 1978 werd uitgegraven voor de aanleg van de autosnelweg E40. De benaming ‘Koolhofvaart’ is afgeleid van hofstede ‘Het Koolhof’, die langs deze waterloop gelegen is.

The domain of 16 ha is located on the border of Nieuwpoort and Koksijde. It borders the Nieuwpoort-Veurne canal and the Groene As 'De Frontzate'. Water-rich nature, water storage and gentle recreation such as walking, picnicking, fishing and mountain biking are central to this domain.
The Koolhofput originated from a 10-hectare sand extraction pit that was excavated in 1978 for the construction of the E40 motorway.
The name 'Koolhofvaart' is derived from the homestead 'Het Koolhof', which is located along this watercourse.
