Falkirk Library on Hope Street in the town centre, has a distinguished history. It took the sponsorship of two different Scottish-born philanthropists - both of whom would have been billionaires in today’s money – to get it up and running. In 1886, Robert Dollar, a wealthy Scots-American industrialist born in Bainsford, Falkirk, donated finds for a public library to be run by the local YMCA. It loaned over 20,000 books and served more 1,000 patrons in the first nine months. At this time it was called The Dollar Free Library.
Within a few years, it was taken over by the local authority, and then the drive to expand it led to a sizeable donation in 1897 by philanthropist and businessman Andrew Carnegie. The Town Council awarded the design contract to architects McArthy and Watson of Edinburgh. Building work was completed in 1902 when Carnegie visited to officially open the building itself. It was one of 660 libraries funded by Andrew Carnegie donations.

Today Falkirk Public Library offers book lending, computer access and courses, a reference library as well as a local and family history collection. The local history collection contains the local newspaper the Falkirk Herald. Family history resources include local census returns, church records and monumental and burial inscriptions, as well as the journal of the local history society – ‘Calatria’. Falkirk Library also provides a podcast and blog.Local libraries like Falkirk Library have come under considerable pressure in recent years due to the impact of covid on the volume of in-person borrowing, as well as the increase in people using electronic reading formats. However, libraries have a wide variety of services and many of the texts they hold are not available online.

The cache is located at: N 55° 59.ABC' W 3° 48.DEF'.
To find the values of ABC take a look at the exterior of Falkirk Library:
- To the left of the main entrance is the original large sandstone frontage of the library. If you look up high and to the left side of that frontage you will see an inscription on 2 lines. Line 1 has a single 7 letter word, and Line 2 has a combination of letters and numbers, and counting 5 along that line you will get a digit. That digit = A.
- On the same original library frontage, there is set of wooden double doors with an arch and crest above them. How many weapons in total in the 4 quarters of the crest (some are held by Scottish warriors, some are displayed without warriors)? The answer = B.
- There is a phrase carved twice above the arch, in english. Using the A=1, B=2 etc method, the 2nd letter of the 2nd word of that phrase = C.
While you are at the library, take a look around, it has a great atmosphere and you can almost feel yourself getting more learned just by being there! Many years ago as a student at University, there was nothing I enjoyed more than a wander through the shelves, looking for books for my course. It made me feel a lot cleverer than I actually was,
even if I hadn't actually read any of the books there! But now I can go there and actually learn about something useful, like reading about Magnetism so I can create my next sneaky urban nano hide!
So why not pay your local library a visit and see what they can offer you, even if it just a chance for some peace and quiet and to breathe in that wonderful book smell.
Oh, while I was getting dewy-eyed about my youth at Uni, I completely forgot to give the rest of the clues for the coordinates! Never mind, you'll figure it out.

This cache has an unusual type of swag - it's a book swap. There is room for about 6 books of A5 or smaller size in the cache. On publication I have put a selection of different books in the cache. Bring along a book you no longer want and if you fancy one of the books in the cache, then swap it. Please note in your logs if you use the book drop, and if you want, you can even mention the books you swap.
