Geocache Description:

St John the Baptist Church Bridgwater.

A simple church micro cache.

Which is NOT hidden on church grounds.

I have no recollection of ever being inside this church, despite the fact that I was christened here. My parents were married at this church, as this was the church my maternal grandfather attended all his life.  My mum went to church on Sundays to get out of tiding her bedroom! She also went to the nearby St. John's primary school, which used to be situated on Blake Place.

St John's church is one of the first churches inspired by the Oxford Movement.  In 1840 the Rev. John Moore began to look for a church site.  Eastover was expanding due to the docks, ship building yards and various brickworks.  There were over 3000 people working in the area and St Mary's church was not big enough.  The Rev. JM Capes agreed to fund the church if locals raised the money for a minister.  The church was designed by John Brown in 1845 in the early English style. It is built of brick and clad in Bath/Ashlar stone, with a slate roof.  The church was designed to have a spire on top the tower, but this was never built.  It is now a grade 2 listed building.

St John the Baptist church was consecrated on August 17th 1846, and the Rev. JC Collins was its first vicar.

Interestingly there is a memorial in the churchyard to those that died in a Cholera outbreak in Bridgwater in 1849.

Please be stealthy and replace as found.
