The historic station near where this geocache is located in Angier was once one of the stops along the Durham & Southern Railway (identified as Mile Post #40.4 along the route between Durham and Dunn). The D&S Rwy ran through the center of town beginning in 1899, was instrumental in the founding of Angier as a town in 1901, and had its last run from Apex to Dunn in 1979. The historic Angier Depot now survives as the Chamber of Commerce, with the SCL 1083 caboose on the other side of the park from it commemorating that important railroad history.
This cache is a replacement, remodification and republication of the former mystery cache at this location known as "Old D&S Rwy (MP 40.4): Angier Depot" (GC43FYC). The description there identifies quite a bit of history about this railway line for those interested in linking to it. After the former geocache owner announced his intent to archive it, I volunteered to adopt it and make it a little more user-friendly by turning it into a traditional cache, and make the description not quite as complicated for searchers to find it.
While the posted coordinates point to the apx. center of the historical rolling transportation structure mentioned above, the actual hiding location is slightly offset and not specifically hidden there. Can't make this too easy, now can I? Enjoy your search.
