Geocache Description:

Congrats to Budzdunwerkin and MyBetterHalf for the FTF!

In 1843 Nicolaus Allgeier established a ferry to cross the Feather River on the road between Sutter's Fort and Sutter's Hock Farm. Sometimes called Nicolaus Ferry or Nicolaus Ranche, this was an early major stopping point on the Feather River during the California Gold Rush. The town of Nicolaus was established there in 1850. Nicolaus has had a post office since July 28, 1851 making it one of the oldest post offices in the state. It was the county seat of Sutter County in the early 1850s.

In 1889, with only a few dollars in his pocket, a young Swiss man named John J. Scheiber stepped off the boat at Ellis Island with dreams of running his own dairy in the land of opportunity. The 20-year-old Scheiber, along with two sisters, Henrietta and Anna, and two nephews, Ambrose and Oswald, continued west to Nicolaus, a small farming community nestled along the Feather River, where his six brothers, Ambrose, Jost, Joseph, Anton, Albin and Morris and sister Josephine had settled earlier.

The Scheiber family is well-represented in the Nicolaus Cemetery, but there are many others buried here. Each was known and loved by someone. Each of them had a life of laughter and joy, of hardship and struggle. Each of them had a story. As you wander among the grave markers here I invite you to think about these people and their stories.

Through the years the Nicolaus Cemetery had fallen into disrepair. In 2008 the Nicolaus Cemetery Restoration was completed bringing dignity back to this sacred ground. Please treat it with the respect it deserves. There is no need to touch or disturb any grave or marker while you gather the information you will need to locate the cache. The container can be found at N 38° 53.ABC W 121° 33.DEF.
