“Once two strangers climbed ol' Rocky Top
Lookin' for a moonshine still;
Strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top,
reckon they never will..."
Cocke County History Series: A cache series celebrating the history and people of Cocke County, Tennessee.
Background: Between the fierce independent streak of its residents, the rugged terrain, and the poverty of rural Appalachia, Cocke County has long been a source of moonshine. Farmers would set up stills on the rugged cliffsides of hollers like this one to convert corn to white lightning, then haul it into town to turn a quick buck, especially during the prohibition era. Although the moonshine tradition has faded with the rise of legal distilleries, it is kept alive by a few old timers who like to brew up a batch to share with friends and family. One of the most famous moonshiners, Popcorn Sutton, lived near Parrottsville until his death. Mark and Digger of "Moonshiners" fame are also Cocke County boys (Digger got his name from his previous occupation as an undertaker. In his undertaking days, HistoryJoe23 worked a few funerals with Digger's father).
