#27 The Dogliest Detective and the Case of the Bearer Bond Bandits

"Toby, come meet a Federal Agent from New York City."  Toby was surprised when the Police Commissioner invited him to sit next to him and a man in a three-piece suit during a luncheon at the state law enforcement conference.

After Toby sat down, the Commissioner said "Toby is a civilian detective that has helped us a few times. He is excellent in a few peculiar specialties."

"These Federal Agents and I are just wrapping up a major national case.  International bearer-bonds worth millions were somehow stolen while in transit from the Far East to New York City when the plane refueled in Anchorage."

The Federal Agent jumped in. "We have great tech nerds and they intercepted cell phone calls detailing how the bonds were hidden in The City near a famous landmark."

"Do you know which city?" asked Toby.

The Federal Agent and Commissioner laughed. "There are many cities, but everyone knows 'The City' is always New York City.  We have three teams searching and digging right now and we will certainly have the bonds in hand by the time I get back for a press conference."

The Commissioner chimed in. "Toby. I grew up in The City and I know how these things work.  These criminals specifically named a famous landmark in Central Park, but the Feds won't tell me which one because they are afraid I will leak it to the press. Of course I would not do that .. or probably would not do it," he said and winked at the Federal Agent.

Toby's nose wrinkled, but he just said "I don't know much about Central Park or New York City, except for a few of my peculiarities." Toby then enjoyed the food and listened to the not-quite-believable stories about how the NYC Federal Agents thought so highly of the Anchorage Police Commissioner .

After lunch the Federal Agent left for the airport and Toby pulled the Commissioner aside. "I don't know much about that park in New York City, but the few peculiar things I do know about it makes me think it might be worthwhile to check out this statue." Toby pointed at a spot on the Anchorage city map.

The Commissioner looked puzzled for a moment, then something clicked.  "I see what you are thinking -- wouldn't that be interesting? I will have it checked out, but quietly."

The next evening Toby was a little surprised to see the national news interviewing the Police Commissioner in Anchorage next to a stack of bearer bonds, but Toby was not too surprised.
