Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Highbury Aqueduct Walking/Cycling Trail. The trail is a gravel track approximately 4 kilometers long from start to finish (one way). If you choose to return from the trail end point to the trail start point via Linear Park, it is a approximately 2km totalling 6km round-trip. The trail can be easily navigated on foot with sturdy walking shoes but due to the length, it is ideally tackled on bike. There is a short steep section at the start where the trail ascends up from Linear Park and an equally steep descent at the end when the trail descends back down to Linear Park.

History of the aqueduct:

The acqueduct was designed to deliver water to the newly constructed Hope Valley Resevoir. Construction began in 1870 and when work was completed, the aqueduct incorporated 4kms of open channel, 800m of above ground pipe and two tunnels covering a further 500m. Water first flowed in the early 1870's at a rate of 100 ML/day until upgrades in 1952 increased the capacity to 190 ML/day. SA Water decommissioned the aqueduct in 2008, and now supply water to the reservoir is achieved via underground pipes along Linear Park. In 2011 work began opening the reserve for community recreation and landscape restoration.
