La Messancy,affluent en rive droite de la Chiers, prend « ses » sources sur la commune d'Arlon. Trois ruisseaux venant de Toernich, Udange et Sesselich se rejoignent à Wolkrange. Le cours d’eau ainsi formé prend le nom de Messancy après avoir reçu les eaux du ruisseau de Bébange.
Après avoir traversé la commune de Messancy du nord au sud, ce cours d’eau d’une vingtaine de kilomètres se jette dans la Chiers à Athus.
Son confluent avec la Chiers fut transformé en écluse lors du temps de l'usine sidérurgique d'Athus afin de garantir en permanence un apport d'eau suffisant pour refroidir les différents hauts-fourneaux de l'usine. Aujourd'hui l'endroit est délaissé et l'accès se fait par un petit chemin dans la rue Cockerill.
La Chiers est un cours d’eau transfrontalier et affluent de la Meuse à Remilly-Aillicourt, prend sa source à Oberkorn dans la commune de Differdange au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg.
Le parcours belge de la Chiers à Athus (1,7 km) et à proximité de Torgny (4 km) ne fait que 5,7 km.
La Chiers après une courte évasion en Belgique à Athus entre en Lorraine française. Elle traverse les départements de Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse et Ardennes pour se jeter après 127 kilomètres dans la Meuse à Remilly-Aillicourt.
Le long de son parcours, la Chiers capte les écoulements de quatre affluents importants : La Messancy à Athus, la Moulaine à Longwy, la Crusnes à Longuyon et l'Othain à Montmédy.
The Messancy, tributary in the right bank of the Chiers, has its springs in the district of Arlon. Three streams coming from Toernich, Udange and Sesselich meet at Wolkrange. The stream thus formed takes the name of Messancy after receiving the waters of the Bébange stream.
After crossing the district of Messancy from north to south, this watercourse of about twenty kilometres flows into the Chiers in Athus.
Its confluence with the Chiers was transformed into a lock at the time of the Athus iron and steel works in order to guarantee a permanent supply of water to cool the various blast furnaces in the factory. Today the site is abandoned and the access is via a small path in the rue Cockerill.
The Chiers is a cross-border river and tributary of the Meuse at Remilly-Aillicour and its spring is in Obercorn in the district of Differdange in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
The Belgian course of the Chiers at Athus and near Torgny is only 1.7 km long.
After a short escape into Belgium at Athus, the Chiers enters French Lorraine. It crosses the departments of Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse and Ardennes to flow into the Meuse at Remilly-Aillicourt after 127 kilometres.
