John Brown's Shipyard

Originally built in 1871 by J & G Thomson the yard was taken over by John Brown & Co in 1897 who quickly became world famous for building a variety of ships but especially large passenger liners and warships.

The Queen Elizabeth 2 launched in 1967 and was the last great liner built at the yard. After almost being scrapped in early 2000 the ship was bought by a Dubai investment company. She visited her birth place right here on the Clyde one last time in 2008 and now operates as a floating hotel in Dubai.

The picture above shows the shipyard with The Queen Elizabeth 2 on stocks and the TSS Shieldhall passing in the water. The Titan Crane (the left most crane in the picture) still exists today and you can see it if you look west down the river.

Unable to compete with the emerging shipyards in Eastern Europe and the far East, John Brown's merged with other Clydeside shipyards in 1968 to form the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders consortium, but that collapsed in 1971. The shipyard closed in 1999.

The 80 acre site was cleared in 2005 to make way for redevelopment as part of the Clyde Waterfront Regeneration Project. Clydebank College behind you opened in 2007.
