Geocache Description:

Furmanstvo v Vipavski dolini

Vozovi s konjsko vprego so bili do polovice preteklega stoletja poglavitno prevozno sredstvo. S Trnovske in Nanoške planote so prevažali predvsem les, oglje in led. Po letu 1950 je furmanstvo zamrlo, saj so glavnino prevoza lesa prevzeli avtoprevozniki. Konjske vprege so počasi izginile, nadomestili so jih traktorji in tovornjaki.

Wagonry in the Vipava Valley

Until the past century, horse wagons were an essential means of transportation. People who transported goods by means of horse-drawn wagons were called wagoners. They were often farmers who sought additional income by putting their wagons to good use. A wagoner required a horse and other necessary gear, while some utilized oxen since they couldn’t afford horses. Wagoners transported wine and produce from the Vipava Valley to Gorizia and Trieste, and across the uplands as well, carting especially wood, charcoal and ice from the Trnovo and Nanos plateaus. Wagonry died out after 1950 as most of the wood transport was taken over by forest management service. Horse-drawn wagons gradually disappeared, replaced by motorized tractors and trucks.

To commemorate the local wagonry tradition once running along this very road, the members of the Manče stonecutters group chiselled an artistic relief of the horse wagon into living rock. The distinct stone relief with its portrayal of a pair of horses pulling a wagon of logs, the wagoner and brakeman, pays homage to the wagoners, the foresters and many others once busy with these activities in the sprawling forests of the Nanos Plateau.

The six-metres-wide and two-metres-tall carved relief involved the work of 16 members of the stonecutters group, which put over 3000 hours of work into their masterpiece. Work on the stone relief started in 2015 and was finished in 2021.
