Geocache Description:

This is the first in a series of caches placed with permission from the National Parks and Wildlife Service.  The circular walk should take between 30 - 45 minutes.  Please park at the suggested waypoint, which is at the entrance to the woods. Reception may be poor in the area so we recommend that you create and download an off-line list in advance.

Rathmullan Wood is one of only a few remnants of Oak Forest that once covered Ireland.  It gives us a glimpse of what the country looked like to our ancestors!  The oaks are Sessile Oaks and there are beech trees that are over 100 years old.  Beech are non-native so they will be replaced by oaks when they die.  Fallen trees are not removed but will become a source of food for fungi and insects.

Enjoy the walk around the woods and add to your log any interesting birds and wildlife that you spot.  Please respect the flora and fauna and remember that this is a National Nature Reserve and a Special area of Conservation.
