Quarterly Clean 2022: Q1 Pinkenba Pick-Up Cache In Trash Out® Event

This cache has been archived.

Captain Terror: The council sent two trucks to pick up the magnificent mountain we created here. They have also set up the area as an area of interest for illegal dumping. Evidently, that many tyres (at least 2.5 tonnes of them) is not normal!

A big and snuggly thank-you to all who helped out. It seems most/all are logged so time for this event to go and think about Q2 2022!

Geocache Description:

26 March 2022, 10:00 - 11:15

8 million tonnes of plastic enters our oceans every year, 80% of it originates from rivers. The route and banks of Boggy Creek have changed extensively in the last few decades, though it still continues to support industry and fishing. Some places along dirt access roads feel very forgotten, and are home to an abundance of litter. Such proximity to mangroves means after rain, it is likely some will wind up in the creek, flowing onwards to the Brisbane River and into Moreton Bay. This CITO is all about intercepting as much as possible before it gets away.

You'll be having a direct and positive impact on the local, regional and global environment at this event. Plus, the opportunity to hang out with other cool geocachers, and maybe find the local geocaches afterwards!

What's the Plan?
This is a CITO Event, and will be tackling along the dirt section of Marine Drive, and adjacent mangroves. There is also some larger items to the north of Harris Road. We'll have a staging area set up at GZ with the equipment you'll need and it's where you'll return full rubbish bags to.

There is a lot of area to cover (up to 600 metres away), and it's hidden in all sorts of terrain - along the driveable dirt road, into the long grass and deep into mangroves. Check out the map for the extent of the cleaning area, which will be possible to access and clean up. Whether you stick to the hard-packed dirt, venture into long grass, or go mangrove diving is up to you!

Meet at GZ at 10:00 where you'll be briefed and can pick a section to clean. Then, when you've filled your bags, or 11:15 arrives, we'll reconvene at GZ for the group photo and make sure the rubbish pile is ready to be collected.

What to Bring?
Please wear appropriate clothing (I would recommend long pants and shoes that can get grubby). BYO sunscreen, bug spray, gloves and water. Bags will be provided.

We want this to be a fun, social and engaging event while still being COVID-Safe.
I kindly ask that you agree to the following expectations:
• Stay at home if you are at all unwell, or have been in the last 7 days,
• Keep a social distance from those not from your household, and
• Maintain good hand hygiene.

To make this event both possible and as brilliant as it will be, let's thank the sponsors:
Brisbane City Council; who are providing rubbish collection,
Ocean Crusaders Waterway Cleaning; who provided bags and equipment, and
All Things Geo; who donated a bunch of prizes and giveaways.
