Geocache Description:

If you are lost or in need of assistance, call the Ranger Station at (239) 707-6328.

Welcome to Lovers Key State Park!

Originally a stronghold of the Calusa people, Lovers Key was once only accessible only by boat. During that time, it was said "lovers" traveled to the island to enjoy its remote and solitary beach. Today, it is one of four barrier islands that make up this popular state park. A haven for wildlife, the islands and their waters are home to a myriad of birds, reptiles, mammals, fish, and more. The two mile long beach is accessible by boardwalk or tram and is popular for shelling, swimming, picnicking, and sunbathing. Black Island has five miles of multiuse trails for hiking and bicycling. Our Welcome and Discovery Center is an educational hub where park goers can learn more about the wildlife, history, activities, and ecosystems at Lovers Key. The park offers family-friendly interpretive programming, including shell walks, trail hikes, wading trips, wildlife seminars, and more. Anglers and boaters can also launch their vessels from the park's free boat ramp.

This is a Lovers Key State Park cache! In this series of seven new caches at the park, each of the first 6 caches contains a letter-number combination that helps you find the coordinates to the final seventh cache, a puzzle cache!

Please be mindful of wildlife and vegetation while geocaching. This route does not require entering any restricted areas, so please be respectful of all roped off areas as they protect critical park habitat. Poison ivy is present on the trails. Dogs are not allowed on the beach at the park but are welcome everywhere else. Lovers Key State Park is open from 8:00 am until sunset 365 days a year.

Optional Contest:

Each cache is dedicated to an animal that calls Lovers Key their home. Information about each animal’s scientific name, appearance, special features, habitat, habitat in Lovers Key, diet, lifespan, current threats, and fun facts can be found at the cache.

After you find all 7 caches, visit either the Ranger Station or the Welcome and Discovery Center, and tell the rangers one fact you learned about each animal. We recommend taking notes or pictures of the animal ID card at the cache! Please do not remove the animal ID card from the cache. This is an optional component that will yield a prize, if you decide to partake, but it is not necessary in order to find the caches.

Successful completion of the geocaching contest at Lovers Key is an activity eligible for a Junior Ranger recreational stamp.
