'Day Of The Jacobite' - Geocache Series
This geocache series takes in the area of what was historically 'Falkirk Muir' an area that is now mostly part of The Callendar Estate. These caches are placed with the kind approval of The Estate Team, who are keen that the history of the area is preserved and appreciated. As part of their activities The Estate Team have placed information posts at intervals around these paths, that help tell the story of The Battle of Falkirk Muir from different perspectives.
This cache series is a straightforward series of traditional caches. Cache 9 in the series is near the site of 2 lab cache stages for 2 different Lab caches that commemorate the battle - '5 Historic Battles of Scotland' and the Falkirk part of the 'John Muir Way' Adlab. There are also currently several existing other caches in the vicinity of the series.
The Battle of Falkirk Muir took place on 17th January 1746 as part of The Jacobite Uprising of Scots supporters of 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' - Charles Edward Stuart, a claimant to the British throne. The Battle is sometimes described as 'The Last Jacobite Victory'. The backdrop of the battle was that the Scots supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie had raided deep into England as part of moves to support the Stuart claim to the throne of Britain. After initial success, a lack of support for the cause amongst English Jacobites caused the Scots army to retreat and consolidate back in Scotland. A campaign of supression of the uprising followed, the English Hanoverians set out from the east near Edinburgh to relieve the Jacobite seige on the Hanoverian-held Stirling Castle. When word got out of their march on Stirling, the Jacobite army marched from Glasgow to meet them. The two forces met at the site of Scotland's largest cattle tryst (open-air market), south of Falkirk.
Parking locations have been added as a waypoint for each cache. There's links to all the caches in the series, below:
